Surfboard Fins

For the Festival of Fast Making, I came up with an idea to make my own surfboard fins. Having seen fin templates before, I knew I could pay for a few templates and then I wanted to use marine grade plywood to shape the fins. When I went into the wood shop hoping to find marine grade plywood one of the technicians recommended I make them out of plastic and use the laser CNC to cut out the shape. With a looming deadline and the benefit of not having to fibreglass the finished product, I figured it made sense to use the technicians advice and go with an acrylic plastic material instead of the plywood. I paid for some templates, traced the templates in Adobe Illustrator, and sent the files off to the digital fabrication lab. The next day, I had three sets of fins rough cut. All there is left to do is build a moulding table for Futures Fin tabs and sand the foil into the rough cut fins.
